Twitter Friends Wordpress plugin gives love to your followers

Published Oct 09, 2008 in Plugins, Twitter Friends

I was looking around the net for twitter plugins and could not find a widget that displayed your twitter friends and followers. So I made one. It’s currently at revision 1.0 at http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/twitter-friends/

It is pretty simple right now. You can choose whether you want to display only pictures of your followers or picture, username, and most recent tweet. It also displays your Twitter stats.

I was having trouble with the Twitter API rate limit when making the plugin. The API says you get 100 hits per hour but is seems much lower then that. I made a cache that only hits Twitter every 5 minutes. That should keep you well under the limit and keep your list nice and fresh.

I have included a stylesheet with the plugin that controls the way the widget looks on your website.

I plan to update the widget often, I already have a few things I want to do

  1. add friends - people I follow. Then combine both friends and followers and make an icon that  indicates whether they are following me or I’m following them.
  2. add an icon for my favorite twitterers and add an icon for private twitterers.
  3. add tooltips that open more information about the followers
  4. add the ability to send tweets directly from the widget.

As you can see I have a lot of plans. Feel free to add some ideas.

Love the plug-in. The only issue I have is Twitter Friends has only updated once since I added it two days ago. For some reason the get_followers() function is not executing on a timed basis. As a quick fix I made it execute every time by home page is loaded.

    Works great now. Any thoughts?

Yeah, I noticed that too. I would update it by going to the admin section, then going to the setting page for Twitter Followers. That would refresh it. I fixed it and have some other updates soon.

I’ve added posting to twitter directly from the widget, and don’t show followers that have not tweeted in a while.

Hey! I love this! (Can you do one for facebook friends? ha ha!)

Anyway, there is a modification I’d like to make but don’t know how. I’d like for it to only show my followers and nothing else. Not my pic, not the twitter logo, not my latest. Just “My Wonderful Twitter Followers” then the follower pics and names. How can I do that?

    Thanks!

Wow, lots of comments, I have to get back on this plugin and release some new features…

The simplexml error is caused from the host only having PHP4. Simplexml is a function found in php5+. Most hosts have stopped offering php4 and offer a way to upgrade.

How do you download the plug-in? Wordpress leads you nowhere. I spent searching Word Press 30 mins gave up.
